MONK WATSON sees DOUG HENNING SHOW
Anyone lucky enough to get to New York City should see "The Magic Show". This is not a for magicians only; however, if one is interested in magic it is a must. We were very lucky getting seats in the third row center. (They are sold out for weeks ahead.) I was all set to not like the show because I have been trained in the Blackstone type of Great Magic. I am sure that if Harry Blackstone could see this show he would, after the first ten minutes, rave about it just as I am doing now. You can see that Doug Henning has spent a lot of hours in the life that he loves, Show Business and Magic. The day we went I looked around at the audience and not one eye was off Doug, and at the finish of a trick or illusion the applause was there.
There is a story running through the show, and you soon forget that. The music is a rather soft rock, that I knew I'd hate. I forgot that in a few minutes also. I missed the old type of Pit Orchestra and the leader standing up in front. These musicians are above the stage, in the back, and one can't see them for a second. Every cue is on the nose, as we say in Show Business. Every flick of the hand is caught with a beat. I'm not sure I could do such a show because I have always waited for bows to come to the top before moving or taking a step. Doug doesn't wait for a thing. The bows are there and the fast moves follow. This gives you an idea of Magic as it is done in 1975...Sold Out!!!!!
